Story
Get to Know Us
Dick and Jan Hedges launched the store, then called Hedgehog.INK, in October 2018 as a retirement project and a way to share their love of reading and writing with the community. When ready to retire for good in February 2024, Jan sold the business to Randi and Jordan Witt who shepherded it for the next few years.
Current owners, Janet and Tim Miller, purchased the business from the Witts in December 2025 and changed the name slightly to Hedgehog Books. While ownership has changed over the years, the store continues to serve readers in Fort Scott and beyond.
Meet the Team

Co-Owner
Janet Miller
Janet grew up reading any book she could get her hands on. Her favorites as a child were Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Little House on the Prairie, and anything featuring horses. Today, she enjoys mysteries, thrillers, young adult, and general & historical fiction, but she also reads self-help and business books. A few of the authors she loves are: Ann Patchett, Barbara Kingsolver, Donna Leon, Jane Harper, and Tana French.

Co-Owner
Tim Miller
As a trained historian (he has a Ph.D. from the University of Kansas), Tim is our resident history buff. If you're looking for a history recommendation, he's the one to ask. He also loves science fiction and golden age mysteries. Fun fact: he's written two food history books.

Bookseller
Stella Nava
Stella loves reading. To her, it feels a lot like getting to live a thousand different lives. And isn’t it cool when there’s intergalactic dragon battles but the core of the story is the human (or orc!) condition? Stella enjoys fantasy, sci-fi, romance and anything that makes her feel something.
More Than Books
Hedgehog Books offers gently used books across a variety of genres, along with local authors’ work and products from local vendors. We’re proud to be part of Fort Scott’s downtown community and to offer visitors a place to browse, discover, and connect.
